Love Elderberry syrup? Then you are bound to fall in love with the Elderberry tree. A shade-loving native, this tree can handle a decent amount of canopy cover and can usually be found growing along riverbanks. The flowers it produces are one of the most delicious smelling scents and are sought after in flavored liquors and wines. Then the elderberries follow and in a few years, you will have your own bounty of berries! As a river border plant, it does love water and the roots will grow towards any source. We have ours at the base of a gutter downspout where it gets full sun all summer and there is no underground plumbing. It's grown so abundantly we have a ton of babies to share!

Requirements

Type: Fruit Tree

Height: 8-12ft tall

Sun: Full Sun to Dappled Sun, highly adaptable

Watering: Loves water but will do okay with once-a-week summer watering

When to Plant: Spring & Fall

Warning TOXIC: The green leaves and stems of the elderberry are toxic, while the drying and cooking of the elderberries cook off any toxicity from the seeds, you do not want to harvest any other parts of the tree. Not best around pets who will aimlessly eat greenery in the yard.

Additional Warning: Do not plant this tree around or near any underground plumbing. The roots will aggressively search for water and can eventually grow into pipes to get it.
